On March 27, 2025, the NHSC issued 50 national food safety standards including GB 31615.2-2025 National Food Safety Standard Safety Evaluation Procedures for Food Strains. Among them, GB 31615.2 was released to provide a unified technical basis for the declaration and regulation of strains to ensure their safety, stability and compliance in food. The standard will be implemented on March 16, 2026. Antion summarized the list of tests required to be carried out for food strains for enterprises' reference.

According to the requirements of GB 31615.2, when evaluating the safety of food-use strains, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze the history of domestic and foreign use and safety information, combine with the results of whole-genome sequencing, and examine the virulence genes, drug-resistance genes and toxin-producing genes and so on. At the same time, animal pathogenicity test, drug resistance test, toxin production test, as well as the necessary toxicology test and other active substance determination are carried out to comprehensively assess the safety of the strains.
