In recent years, the State Administration for Market Regulation has continued to increase supervision, guide enterprises to optimize labeling methods, and promote the improvement of the food label management system.

01 Guide food enterprises to optimize the labeling of production date and shelf life

On March 26, 2024, the Announcement on Encouraging food Enterprises to Optimize the Labeling of Production Date and Shelf Life of Prepackaged Foods (hereinafter referred to as the Announcement) was released, to guide food enterprises to optimize and improve from eight aspects, such as the marking location of the food production date and shelf life, size of characters, color of font, the order of year, month and day, so that the label content is more clear and eye-catching. Driven by local market supervision departments, the food industry responded positively to the content of the Announcement, and initial results have been achieved.

02 Accelerate the introduction of food label management system

The National Health Commission is organizing the revision of the National Food Safety Standard General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods (GB 7718), and the State Administration for Market Regulation is accelerating the development of the Measures for Supervision and Administration of Food Label. Improve the overall labeling requirements for prepackaged foods, focusing on the production date and the expiration date of shelf life, and clarify the prohibited contents of food label.

03 Explore pilot work for "digital labels"

In response to the problems of food labels limited by the panel and the small character size of traditional labels, the National Health Commission organized the pilot work of digital labels of prepackaged foods to improve the experience and convenience of consumers reading food labels in a digital way.

04 Continue to strengthen the supervision of food label

The State Administration for Market Regulation revised and issued the Measures for the Administration of Supervision and Inspection of Food Production and Operation, stipulating that local market supervision departments at or above the county level shall supervise and inspect the contents of food labels of food manufacturers and operators, and urge food manufacturers and operators to recall or take remedy measures in time for foods whose labels do not meet requirements.
