Recently, four foods for special medical purposes (hereinafter referred to as FSMP) suitable for phenylketonuria, kidney disease and diabetes have been included in the priority review and approval procedure.

In order to better meet the nutritional needs of patients, the State Administration for Market Regulation established a priority review and approval procedure for FSMP, and implemented a priority review for products such as rare disease categories, clinically urgent and not yet approved new categories, and the review time limit was reduced from a maximum of 90 working days to 30 working days, giving priority to on-site verification and sampling inspection.

FSMP means foods that are specially processed and prepared to meet the special requirements of nutrition or meals for people with restricted eating, disorder of digestion and absorption, metabolic disorder or special disease status. FSMP plays an important role in nutrition support for patients’ disease treatment, recovery and maintenance of body function, and its quality and safety are related to the health and life safety of special people. The State Administration for Market Regulation will further study and optimize relevant policies and measures, encourage the development of new products, and continue to promote the construction of a healthy China.
