Q: What are the scope of use and amount of galactooligosaccharide?

A: Galactooligosaccharide was approved as a new resource food (now known as novel food ingredient) in the former Ministry of Health Announcement No. 20 of 2008, and its basic information, production process, scope of use, consumption amount and quality requirements were clearly stipulated. The National Food Safety Standard Standard for the Use of Nutritional Fortification Substances in Foods (GB 14880) has clearly stipulated the scope of use and amount of galactooligosaccharide as a food nutritional fortification substance. Announcement No. 8 of 2017 by the National Health Commission approved galactooligosaccharide (whey filter solution source) as a food nutritional fortification substance, and its scope of use and amount are the same as that of galactooligosaccharide (lactose source) in GB 14880. Announcement No. 4 of 2019 by the National Health Commission approved galactooligosaccharide (whey filtration solution source) as a food nutritional fortification substance for the use of formulated milk powder (milk powder for children only), and the amount of which should not exceed 64.5 g/kg.

When galactooligosaccharide is used as a food nutritional fortification substance, it should meet relevant requirements of GB 14880, and when galactooligosaccharide is used as a novel food ingredient, it should meet the relevant provisions of the original announcement of novel food ingredient. Food production and operation should be strictly implemented in accordance with relevant laws, regulations, standards and announcements.
