Crocus Sativus was Included in List of CBEC Retail Import Goods

On February 21, 2022, eight departments including the Ministry of Finance announced that starting from March 1, 2022, the List of Cross-border E-commerce (CBEC) Retail Import Commodities will be optimized and adjusted, in which 29 commodities will be newly added, and Crocus sativus will be included in the List.

According to the data, Crocus sativus is a perennial flower of the genus Crocus of the family Iridaceae, and it is also a common flavoring substance. Crocus sativus is mainly distributed in Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and Central Asia. It was introduced to China in the Ming Dynasty and was listed in the Compendium of Materia Medica as a drug, which is mainly used to treat depression and stuffiness, invigorate the circulation of blood and also treat palpitation. It is planted in Zhejiang province and other places of China.

Under the item Crocus sativus in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, it's stated that the product is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a plant of the family Iridaceae. Therefore, crocus sativus is often regarded as a drug, and is often required to show the Imported Drug Clearance Form during customs clearance. However, crocus sativus is one of the spices and condiments allowed in China. In the National Standard of the People's Republic of China: Spices and Condiments - Nomenclature (GB/T 12729.1-2008), National Standard of the People's Republic of China: Natural Spices - Classification (GB/T 21725-2017) and National Food Safety Standard Standard for the Uses of Food Additives (GB 2760-2014), it is clearly stipulated that crocus sativus is a food flavoring substance that can be added to food.
