On March 17, 2023, the European Commission has adopted Regulation (EU)2023/589, amending Regulation (EU)2016/127 on the "protein requirements for infant and follow-on infant formula produced from protein hydrolysates", with immediate effect.

The main revisions are: Annex I, II and III of Regulation (EU)2016/127 in accordance with the annexes to this Regulation. The details are as follows.

The Regulation should be binding as a whole and apply directly to all member states.

(1) Protein-related requirements Group A for infant formula produced from protein hydrolysates, follow-on formula produced from hydrolyzed protein (softened sweet whey protein extracted from milk after casein precipitation with chymotrypsin, containing 63% casein-glycopeptide-free whey protein isolate and 37% sweet whey protein concentrate).

(2) Protein-related requirements Group B for infant formula produced from protein hydrolysates, follow-on formula produced from hydrolyzed protein (whey protein derived from milk, containing 77% acidic whey and 23% sweet whey).

(3) Protein-related requirements Group C for infant formula produced from protein hydrolysates, follow-on formula produced from hydrolyzed protein (whey protein derived from milk, consisting of 100% sweet whey protein concentrate).
