China's Dairy Imports in the First Quarter of 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, China imported 990,800 tons of dairy products, with a year-on-year decrease of 12.3%; the value of import was 3.835 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 7.8%. Among them, dried dairy products were 712,400 tons, with a year-on-year decrease of 11.7%, and the value of import was 3.397 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 9.4%; liquid milk was 278,500 tons, with a year-on-year decrease of 13.9%, and the value import was 438 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 2.9%.

In the first quarter of 2022, 712,400 tons of dried dairy products were imported, a year-on-year decrease of 11.7%, and the value of import was 3.397 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. The three major categories of products include 458,100 tons of bulk packaged milk powder, accounting for 64.3%, 108,900 tons of whey, accounting for 15.3%, and 57,600 tons of infant formula, accounting for 8.1%.

Bulk Packaged Milk Powder

In the first quarter of 2022, 458,100 tons of bulk packaged milk powder were imported, with a year-on-year increase of 2.9%, and the value of import was 1.824 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 26.6%. The average price was 3,982 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 22.9%. Among them, 386,100 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 84.3%, a year-on-year increase of 2.3%; 26,000 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 5.7%, a year-on-year increase of 32.9%; and 18,700 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 4.1%, a year-on-year decrease of 35.8%.

Infant Formula Milk Powder

In the first quarter, 57,600 tons of infant formula milk powder were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 5.6%, the value of import was 935 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 7.1%, and the average price was 16,226 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year decrease of 1.7%. Among them, 42,800 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 74.3%, a year-on-year increase of 5.5%; 10,900 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 18.9%, a year-on-year decrease of 30.1%; and 1,400 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 2.4%, a year-on-year decrease of 10.8%.

Whey

In the first quarter, 108,900 tons of whey were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 46.2%, and the value of import was 175 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 28.9%. The average price was 1,602 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 15.3%. Among them, 48,900 tons were imported from the United States, accounting for 44.9%, a year-on-year decrease of 38.2%; 42,400 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 38.9%, a year-on-year decrease of 42.7%; and 5,600 tons were imported from Belarus, accounting for 5.2%, a year-on-year decrease of 69.4%.

Cheese

In the first quarter, 40,500 tons of cheese were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 20.6%, and the value of import was 202 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 11.0%. The average price was 4,985 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 12.0%. Among them, 23,500 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 58.1%, a year-on-year decrease of 29.9%, 8,200 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 20.3%, a year-on-year increase of 1.4%, and 5,600 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 13.9%, a year-on-year decrease of 9.8%.

Cream

In the first quarter, 42,500 tons of cream were imported, with a year-on-year increase of 3.7%, and the value of import was 252 million US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 45.7%. The average price was 5,931 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 40.9%. Among them, 38,700 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 91.1%, a year-on-year increase of 8.9%, and 3,000 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 7.1%, a year-on-year decrease of 19.5%.

Condensed milk

In the first quarter, 4,600 tons of condensed milk were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 28.1%, and the value of import was 9 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 30.8%. The average price was 1,979 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 0.7%. Among them, 2,600 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 57.0%, a year-on-year decrease of 46.3%, and 1,100 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 41.9%, a year-on-year increase of 73.2%.

Fresh milk

In the first quarter, 277,900 tons of fresh milk were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 12.5%, and the value of import was 436 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 0.9%. The average price was 1,569 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase 13.4%. Among them, 149,000 tons were imported from the EU, accounting for 53.6%, a year-on-year decrease of 15.6%, 90,600 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 32.6%, a year-on-year decrease of 12.5%, and 32,000 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 11.5%, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%.

Yogurt

In the first quarter, 500 tons of yogurt were imported, with a year-on-year decrease of 91.1%, and the value of import was 2 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 81.8%. The average price was 3,857 US dollars/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 98.1%. Among them, 300 tons were imported from New Zealand, accounting for 58.4%, a year-on-year decrease of 52.8%, and 100 tons were imported from Australia, accounting for 18.9%, a year-on-year decrease of 98.1%.
