On June 19, 2025, the General Administration of China Customs (GACC) published the information on food not allowed to enter China in May 2025. A total of 428 batches of imported food from 38 countries/regions were rejected.
Most non-compliant imported food in May came from the U.S. (20.3%, mostly meat and grain products), followed by Hong Kong, China (17.8%, mostly juice) and Japan (14.3%, mostly snacks and beverages). The main food categories that were rejected include fruits and vegetables from Hong Kong, China, aquatic products from Indonesia, Ecuador, Pakistan, meat products from the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, processed fish and meat products from the U.S., Thailand, and grain products from the U.S., Japan. The major reasons for import rejections were as follows:
Non-compliance with national food safety standards (47.4%)
Unqualified labeling (28.5%)
Inconsistence between goods and certificate (12.9%)
Issues with overseas food manufacturer registration (4.4%)
Failure to provide documents or certificates as required (3.5%)
The General Administration of China Customs stated that all these foods that were not allowed to enter China have been lawfully returned or destroyed.
